Langston Hughes'
Mother to Son
Well,son,I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy,don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now --
For I'se still goin',honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
本篇中的ain't, I'se, climbin', reachin' , landin's,turnin', goin'
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
另外,像I'se就是 I shall的缩写。
thy = your
yon = over their
thee = you(古英语thou的宾格)等等。
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks钉子in it,
And splinters,碎石
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet地毯 on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
So boy,don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now –
For I'se still goin',honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
According to the passage, the son must continue climbing because
A. he made bad choices
B. there is light just ahead
C. everyone faces challenges
D. his mother is still fighting
E. eventually things will improve
Don't you fall now –
For I'se still goin',honey,
Dirge in Woods
BY GEORGE MEREDITH
A wind sways the pines,
And below
Not a breath of wild air;
Still as the mosses that glow
On the flooring and over the lines
Of the roots here and there.
The pine-tree drops its dead;
They are quiet, as under the sea.
Overhead, overhead
Rushes life in a race,
As the clouds the clouds chase;
And we go, And we drop like the fruits of the tree,
Even we, Even so.
Death is an inevitable part of life.
